3. Screening ages and frequencies

Overview

Women aged 50-69: annual vs. biennial screening

Issued on: February 2017

Healthcare question

Healthcare question

Should annual mammography screening vs. biennial mammography screening be used for early detection of breast cancer in women aged 50 to 69?

Recommendation

Recommendation

For asymptomatic women aged 50 to 69 with an average risk of breast cancer, the ECIBC's Guidelines Development Group (GDG) recommends not implementing annual mammography, in the context of an organised population-based screening programme.

Recommendation strength

Strong recommendation
Very low certainty of the evidence

Justification

Justification

Based on the strong recommendation against annual over triennial screening and conditional recommendation of biennial over triennial screening, for the annual vs. biennial mammography screening comparison, the ECIBC's GDG agreed on a strong recommendation against annual screening without the need to discuss in detail the evidence to decision framework criteria.
