Milestones

The European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC) aims to ensure that essential quality care for breast cancer is provided across Europe and is equally accessible regardless of where a person lives or is treated, or their financial resources. 

To achieve this goal, the initiative is developing: 

  • evidence-based guidelines for screening and diagnosis of cancer,
  • quality assurance schemes for cancer services covering the entire care pathway, comprising screening and diagnosis, as well as treatment, follow-up and supportive care.
2026
  • The activities of the European quality assurance updating methodology topic-specific group have started. This group will design the methodology for keeping the European quality assurance schemes for cancer care services up to date and is composed of a multidisciplinary panel of experts with experience in quality assurance activities.
2025
  • Public release of the first official version of the European quality assurance scheme for breast cancer services manual,
  • Appointment of a new Vice-Chair and additional members to the ECIBC Working Group, finalisation of the fourth updating round of the European Guidelines.
2024
  • Endorsement of the finalised version of the European Quality Assurance Scheme for Breast Cancer Services manual by the European cooperation for Accreditation (EA) for mandatory application in accredited certification according to the International standard ISO/IEC 17065,
  • Fourth update of the European breast cancer guidelines: update of 3 recommendations.
2023
  • Improvements to the European quality assurance scheme based on feedback from the testing phase (assessment of the feasibility of the service requirements and evaluation of the accredited certification framework),
  • Fourth update of the European breast cancer guidelines: update of 5 recommendations,
  • Appointment of a new guidelines development working group chair.
2022
  • Testing of the applicability of the European quality assurance scheme for breast cancer services in healthcare settings,
  • Third update of the European breast cancer guidelines: update of 2 recommendations.
2021
  • Completion and release of the finalised drafts of the European Auality Assurance Scheme for Breast Cancer Services manual and the Scheme Owner Manual for testing in healthcare settings,
  • Completion of the European healthcare guidelines on breast cancer screening and diagnosis with a total of 74 recommendations and 4 good practice statements,
  • Third update of the European breast cancer guidelines: update of 8 recommendations.
2020
  • Second update of the European breast cancer guidelines: update of 4 recommendations,
  • Launch of a dedicated section for guidelines on the management of breast cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
2019
  • Release of 5 recommendations on the frequency of screening, informing about results, further assessment, healthcare professional’s training and staging interventions,
  • First release of the collection of international guidelines on breast cancer care.
2018
  • Release of 36 recommendations on screening and diagnosis,
  • Testing of the European guidelines updating strategy on 2 recommendations (first update).
2017
  • Release of 25 recommendations on screening and diagnosis.
2016
  • Release of 7 recommendations on screening,
  • Initiation of development of the European quality assurance scheme requirements,
  • ECIBC scope definition.
2015
  • Appointment of ECIBC working groups: Guidelines Development Group (GDG) and Quality Assurance Development Group (QASDG),
  • Launch of the ECIBC website.
